The book “The Nevesinje Rifle – A Shot Echoing Through Centuries” was presented last evening at the National Library in Trebinje. It contains facsimile editions of three significant works documenting the Herzegovina Uprising of 1875–1878.
The featured works include “The Nevesinje Uprising of 1874 and the Beginning of the Uprising in Herzegovina in 1875” by Risto T. Proroković (1905), “Monuments on the Herzegovina Uprising of 1875” (1928), and “Herzegovina 1875–1878” by Mirko S. Radoičić (1961).
The book is published by the Association of Nevesinje Natives in Belgrade.
Zoran Janjić, president of the Executive Board of the Association, told reporters that this book is part of the activities commemorating 150 years since the start of the Herzegovina Uprising—known as the Nevesinje Rifle.
“We decided to reprint these three books because they are among the oldest written about the uprising, they are authentic, and they provide essential historical information,” said Janjić.
The book promotion was held within the framework of the Festival of European and Mediterranean Film, and the documentary film of the same name will also be screened.
Predrag Milojević, artistic director of the festival, told reporters that the film had its premiere in Nevesinje a month ago and that he is pleased the Trebinje audience will also have the opportunity to see it.
The book was published as part of the activities of the joint Organizing Committee of the governments of Republika Srpska and Serbia, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the Herzegovina Uprising, widely known as the Nevesinje Rifle.
According to historians, this uprising had a profound and far-reaching impact on the history of the Serb people, as well as on the resolution of the Eastern Crisis in the second half of the 19th century.
