The City Reading Room in Prijedor hosted the promotion of the book “Mother” by local author Đuro Trkulja, who said he wanted to pay tribute to all mothers and their selflessness—especially his own mother, Mika.
The work “Mother” is dedicated not only to Trkulja’s mother, but, as he put it, “to all mothers—heroines of life.”
Trkulja was not yet two years old when Ustaše killed his father in Stari Majdan, and his mother Mika managed to save him by hiding him in a bundle while fleeing through the rugged and snowy terrain of Mount Grmeč.
In his address to the audience, Trkulja said this evening was an opportunity to present his 26th published book, which he considers the crown of his literary work.
“The greatness of the mother’s role is such that I would suggest to linguists that the word ‘mother’ should be written with a capital letter,” Trkulja emphasized.
He added that this occasion also marked two important anniversaries—85 years of life and 70 years of writing.
“I’ve been writing since I was 15. Already in the first year of high school, I began publishing in a newspaper, and I’ve never stopped writing since. This book is the crown of my work, dedicated to my mother,” said Trkulja.
Eighty-five-year-old Đuro Trkulja has been writing since the age of fifteen and has published 26 books so far.
The evening was enriched by a performance from the male vocal group of the Association for the Preservation of Tradition from Prijedor.
The event was organized by the “Cyril and Methodius” Public Library as part of its biannual contest aimed at promoting local authors and their works.
