Staša Košarac, Deputy Chair of the Council of Ministers, emphasized that Serbs were the most severely persecuted people in the Podrinje and Birač regions, and that it is both shameful and unacceptable that no one has been held accountable to this day for the cruel and brutal murders of Serbs in this area.
“Today we mark 33 years since the crimes committed by members of the so-called Army of BiH against 3,267 Serbs from Middle Podrinje and Birač during the Defensive-Patriotic War. These monstrous crimes against innocent men, women, and children were a continuation of the systematic destruction of the Serb people throughout the 20th century,” Košarac stated.
He pointed out that Serbs were killed in the most horrific ways, often on major Orthodox holidays, and that it is especially painful that these crimes remain unpunished.
Košarac stressed that Serb victims have been waiting more than three decades for justice.
“Podrinje and Birač are among the regions where our people suffered the most brutal atrocities. Serbs were indeed the most victimized population in this area. That is a fact—no matter how hard others try to brand us with the shameful label of a ‘genocidal people’, to rewrite history, and to falsify the events of the war,” Košarac wrote on Instagram.
Košarac concluded that it is our sacred duty and moral obligation never to forget our victims and never to allow their suffering to be diminished or erased.
