Details of the visit have been revealed on the official Facebook page of the Hilandar Monastery.
The news that Mel Gibson chose to spend Vidovdan, one of the most significant Serb holidays, at the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos spread across the globe within hours—and now the reason behind this decision has come to light.
“Renowned actor, director, and producer Mel Gibson arrived at the Holy Imperial Serbian Lavra Hilandar ahead of Vidovdan. He spent the holiday with the brotherhood of Hilandar, joined them at the monastery table, and attended the all-night vigil.
Gibson visited Hilandar for prayer and spiritual inspiration in preparation for the filming of his upcoming movie The Resurrection, which is set to begin in September. He will spend several days on Mount Athos.
His film The Passion of the Christ, which depicts the events from the life of Jesus Christ leading up to the Crucifixion, had a profound impact on the entire Christian world—and beyond.
The Resurrection will follow the events that occurred after the Son of God rose from the dead.
Over the years, Mel Gibson has spoken publicly about his faith and Christianity. He has consistently expressed a deep belief in the truth of biblical events, which continues to motivate him to bring them to the screen,” the statement reads.
