Vranješ: A very optimistic message from Washington that they will no longer interfere in BiH’s internal affairs

The Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Serbia, Aleksandar Vranješ, stated that it is very important that the United States, from Dayton, sent the message that they will no longer interfere in the internal affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and called on all parties to sit at the table and reach a consensus on the future of BiH through internal dialogue.

“This message from Dayton is very optimistic because, at some point, someone will have to remember that the only way for BiH to survive is through internal agreement, that is, consensus as prescribed by the Dayton Agreement,” said Vranješ.

He pointed out that the position of the U.S. had been heavily oriented toward interventions in the political system and in the substance of the Dayton Peace Agreement, as they were the ones who most supported certain political representatives and financed various projects aimed at strengthening the BiH-level institutions at the expense of the entities, using diplomacy, power, and money to achieve what they couldn’t negotiate in Dayton.

“They did not succeed in everything they imagined — creating a unitary, centralized state as originally intended. These days, for the first time, we hear from the U.S. that they will no longer interfere. They stated that they do not believe they should intervene in internal matters and have called on all sides in BiH to sit at the table and reach a consensus on the country’s future,” said Ambassador Vranješ.

Vranješ believes that there is now a global repositioning regarding BiH, with Russia clearly advocating its position on the high representative, China also stating that the high representative is no longer necessary, and the United States now saying that internal agreement is essential.

“Bosniaks are the most numerous people in BiH and bear the greatest responsibility, yet they are the only ones calling for international intervention. Only they are not calling for dialogue, whereas you will hear calls for dialogue from Republika Srpska, from HDZ, from Mostar,” the ambassador emphasized.

Speaking about the Franco-German non-paper for BiH and its contents, Vranješ said that it only shows the ill intent of Germany and France towards Republika Srpska and BiH, as it does not mention that within BiH, there is one man who is entirely unappointed and who is reconstructing the political system through his decisions, changing laws and suspending the Constitution.

“The European Commission stated in its 2019 opinion that the use of Bonn Powers is incompatible with the European future of BiH. Today, this is not mentioned anywhere,” Vranješ said on K1 television.

He stated that everything about the Franco-German non-paper is problematic, adding that the document is like imaginary numbers in mathematics — it exists in theory, but not in practice.

He emphasized that the Dayton Agreement not only ended the war but also created the entire political system.

Vranješ noted that since the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement, the Constitution has not been changed, except in one annex related to the Brčko District, while the real situation on the ground — due to various international interventions — has reversed everything by 180 degrees.

“You now have other institutions, a greater number of ministries, a completely different political system than the one prescribed by the Constitution. And now someone from the West comes and says, ‘It’s a living document’ — well then, why don’t you change your own constitution that way if it’s so alive? When we say that BiH is the only neocolony on European soil in the 21st century, that should be a criticism of the international community,” Vranješ concluded.
