At last night’s conference in Dayton marking the 30th anniversary of the Peace Agreement, political Sarajevo received a clear rejection from the new U.S. administration.
In a diplomatically worded speech, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau clearly stated: times have changed, you must adapt, and consensus is the only path to agreement.
Foreign Minister Elmedin Konaković and Christian Schmidt did not receive what they came for.
They were not given support, nor condemnation, not even understanding.
Landau made it clear — this is the message of the Trump administration.
“The U.S. does not offer unlimited resources for undefined, uncertain, or unrealistic plans. We are not interested in imposing a vision of society that reflects the preferences of distant bureaucrats. We are willing to work hard, but we will only work with those committed to practical realism for their country,” said Landau.
Christian Schmidt seemed to grasp the message, and his remarks were rather awkward.
Konaković, however, didn’t seem to understand Landau’s speech. After Landau spoke, Konaković continued speaking about the need for the Americans to remain involved in Bosnia and Herzegovina, nostalgically recalling the “good times” when decisions were made on behalf of the Bosniaks — how, as he put it, they made a state for them…
Since the Dayton conference, the only coverage in Federation media is that Konaković sat with Schmidt waiting for their turn at the podium. What was actually said — including by the Deputy Secretary of State — is nearly impossible to find.
