Žižović: It would be nice to win the Supercup!

Borac footballers will face Zrinjski from Mostar tonight at 8:30 PM at the “Bilino Polje” stadium in Zenica in the Supercup match. This is a clash between the champions and the Cup winners from the 2023/24 season, a match that was originally scheduled for December but was postponed and will now be played at the very end of the current season.

It will also mark the first Supercup match since 2001, and the first since the joint Premier League of BiH was established in the 2002/03 season. Banja Luka’s team effectively said goodbye to the league title after losing in the last round away to Radnik in Bijeljina, as they now trail Mostar by four points with only two rounds remaining. According to Borac head coach Mladen Žižović, the match in Zenica will be an opportunity for the two best teams in Bosnia and Herzegovina to face off once again this season—and to fight for a trophy.

“The Supercup hasn’t been played in a long time, and this is a nice opportunity to win a trophy. We’ve had a very successful season, which is now coming to an end, and it would be great if we could emerge victorious from a match between the two best teams in BiH and lift the Supercup,” said Žižović.

The “red-blue” coach emphasized once again that many people still don’t realize what a major achievement Borac accomplished with their performances on the European stage this season.

“How big of a success this is will become clear in the seasons to come. But it’s evident that the large number of matches has left a mark on the players. That’s why I still don’t know who will be available for the match in Zenica. We have several players with minor injuries and others who are not fully fit, so we’ll decide the starting lineup right before kickoff,” Žižović added.

In recent days, there has been increasing speculation that Žižović, whose contract expires at the end of the season, will be leaving the City Stadium and possibly taking over as the new head coach of Vojvodina at the “Karađorđe” stadium in Novi Sad.

“My plans, as has been the case throughout the entire season, are tied exclusively to Borac, so I’m not at all concerned with the ongoing rumors. I’m fully focused on the Supercup match, the remaining two rounds of the league, and the final of the Republika Srpska Cup ‘Dr Milan Jelić.’ Only after all of that is over will I sit down with the club’s leadership and see what comes next. Until then, I’m thinking only about Borac,” Žižović stated.

Low interest

Although this is the first time since the start of the joint Premier League that the Supercup is being played, interest in the match between the two best teams in BiH is surprisingly low. Ticket sales, priced between 15 and 30 KM, have been poor up until the day before the match, and a large crowd is not expected tonight at “Bilino Polje” stadium.
