“Theatre in the small town, or the monkey and the tragedian” coming to Bijeljina

“Theatre in the small town, or the monkey and the tragedian” coming to Bijeljina

Theatre lovers in Bijeljina are in for a true treat. On May 27 at 8:00 PM, the play “Pozorište u palanci iliti majmun i tragičar” (Theatre in the small town, or the monkey and the tragedian) will be performed in the main hall of the “Semberija” Cultural Center, presented by the City Theatre of Loznica.

Inspired by a short story by Radoje Domanović, this play delivers an emotional and satirical tale about the first attempts to establish theatre in small Serbian towns at the end of the 19th century. Written and directed by Radoslav Zlatan Đorić, the drama brings to life the spirit of that era through the fate of a group of travelling actors whose effort to perform “The Battle of Kosovo” ends in failure—because the audience is more interested in the monkey’s acrobatics than in a serious drama.

Gavrilo Mihailović, a tragedian and the main character, defiantly proclaims: “Give me two planks and one passion!”—striving to create a new theatre despite defeat and misunderstanding. This play, both humorous and poignant, reflects the struggle of artists to establish theatre in a society slow to accept it.

The organizers invite all theatre enthusiasts to join in celebrating a story of passion, resistance to mediocrity, and deep love for the art of theatre.
