Although it may seem unlikely to combine a love for both science and art, Sonja Mikić, a high school graduate from Srbac, proves otherwise with her talents. She expresses emotions through painting and poetry with equal success, while her knowledge in finance and banking makes her unmatched among her peers.
Sonja is a senior student of the economics technician program at the “Petar Kočić” Secondary School Center in Srbac and is the recipient of the prestigious Vuk Diploma. She has expressed herself creatively since childhood, participating in numerous extracurricular activities. By winning first place at the recent national competition in financial markets held in Banja Luka, she confirmed her status as one of the top students of her generation.
“I’ve been passively preparing for this competition since my second year of high school, when I first encountered the subject of monetary economics and banking. This subject is taught by professor Lela Bakić, who played a key role in my preparation. Her approach and dedication to students enabled many of us to achieve top results,” said Sonja, who was awarded 120 shares of Telekom Srpske a.d. Banja Luka and a professional book titled Corporate Finance – Theory and Practice for her victory.
She emphasized that this recognition has further motivated her to pursue studies in international business or economics with a focus on finance and banking.
“I’ve applied for the first enrollment round at the Faculty of Economics in Ljubljana. My priority is to complete my three-year undergraduate studies, followed by a master’s degree, and then I’ll consider what comes next. I’ll remember my high school years as a time of personal growth – I’ve become more mature and better at handling failure and difficult moments,” she added.
Besides her achievements in the field of economics, Sonja also writes poetry and has been a member of the school’s journalism club since her second year.
“Essays, written assignments, and articles have always come naturally to me because they stem from personal emotions. I’ve been writing poetry for the past two years, usually when I’m inspired—either by joy or sorrow,” said Sonja, who also wrote the best literary piece among high school students in Srbac two years ago on the topic of the First Srbac Light Infantry Brigade.
Her love for art began in childhood, with a particular passion for painting. She most often uses acrylics on canvas and paper and has participated multiple times in painting workshops at the “Bardača-Srbac” Art and Ecology Colony.
“I’ve loved painting since I was little—it’s how I relax my soul. I’m not so drawn to landscapes—more so to portraits or cartoon characters,” she admitted.
Although she plans to focus on her studies in the coming years, she has no intention of neglecting her hobbies and encourages young people to never abandon what truly drives them.
“School has always been my top priority, but I believe anything is possible in life if you set the right priorities. Even when things get tough, it’s important to never give up,” Sonja emphasized.
English language excellence
Sonja Mikić is also proud of her achievements in learning English. She was enrolled in the Oxford course for over ten years.
“I’ve passed the C1 level and received numerous diplomas, certificates, and awards from competitions. I’m very proud of that,” she said.
