National Assembly supports Cvijanović’s veto on controversial Presidency conclusions

The National Assembly of Republika Srpska has supported the veto of the Serb member and Chairwoman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željka Cvijanović, regarding the controversial conclusions adopted by Presidency members Denis Bećirović and Željko Komšić.

By a two-thirds majority, the National Assembly confirmed Cvijanović’s statement declaring the conclusion adopted at the 22nd regular session of the Presidency of BiH, held on May 12 without consensus, to be highly detrimental to the vital interests of Republika Srpska.

A total of 64 deputies voted in favor of confirming Cvijanović’s statement, while five were against.

Those who voted against the veto were deputies from parties based in the Federation of BiH—SDA and SDP—while deputies from the List for Justice and Order and the People’s Front abstained from voting.

In one of the disputed conclusions, Bećirović and Komšić, outvoting Cvijanović, called on EUFOR to assist police agencies in BiH with the arrest of officials from Republika Srpska.

Addressing the deputies, Cvijanović said she initiated the mechanism for protecting vital entity interests because she believes that an institutional response through the National Assembly of Republika Srpska is the best defense against attempts to use the BiH Presidency for political showdowns.

The special session was attended by the President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, Prime Minister Radovan Višković, and other officials.
