Kovačević: Bosnia and Herzegovina’s accession to the EU with the OHR is unimaginable hypocrisy

Serb delegate in the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Radovan Kovačević, stated that Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot join the European Union while the Office of the High Representative exists, calling it unimaginable hypocrisy.

Kovačević emphasized that there is no greater hypocrisy than the idea that BiH can move toward EU membership with the Office of the High Representative still in place.

“That is hypocrisy of the unimaginable kind,” Kovačević said.

He underlined that nowhere in Europe—or the world—is there a case where legal proceedings are conducted against someone for respecting the Constitution, especially not against an individual who was elected by the people as President of the Republic.

“If that is the rule of law we are expected to negotiate with the EU about, then we are giving up not only on the European path but on anything related to Europe,” Kovačević told Euronews, questioning whether the European Union is truly based on the rule of law.

Kovačević added that he has repeatedly raised this question with people from the European Union, both in Brussels and elsewhere.

“Is it the rule of law when a foreigner comes and, against the Constitution, against democratic institutions and democratically elected representatives of citizens and peoples in those institutions, enacts laws, makes decisions, and conducts direct political persecution against people who refuse to submit to the will of a foreigner in their own country?” Kovačević asked.

If you want to be a democracy, he pointed out, you cannot act against the Constitution.

“What kind of democracy is it when a foreigner carries out direct political persecution of someone who refuses to comply with his actions? It is grotesque,” Kovačević concluded.
