Eexplanation of the Dutch government on not imposing sanctions on the president of Republika Srpska

The Dutch government has decided not to impose sanctions on Milorad Dodik, president of Republika Srpska, and has submitted a full explanation to the country’s parliament regarding this decision.

“The government, in accordance with the proposal of MP Piri and others, did advocate for EU sanctions and the consideration of other options within the Benelux group of countries at the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting held on April 14, such as further suspension of EU project funding intended for Republika Srpska. In certain cases, when there is a threat to public order, it is possible to take national measures. In this case, such measures cannot be sufficiently justified. Therefore, considering options through the EU remains the best course of action for the government, also due to the effectiveness of implementing such measures,” the explanation states, as reported by Nezavisne.

The parliament had requested that sanctions be imposed on Dodik, citing his actions allegedly undermining the constitutional structure of BiH. However, sanctions at the EU level have not been imposed due to opposition from Hungary.
