UN Security Council calls for political dialogue in BiH and preservation of multiethnic democracy

The United Nations Security Council held closed-door consultations on Friday, at the request of Slovenia, to discuss the current situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

All member states reaffirmed the importance of the Dayton Peace Agreement, expressed support for the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and emphasized the need to preserve the country as a multiethnic democracy, said Samuel Žbogar, Slovenia’s Ambassador to the UN, who initiated the meeting due to rising concerns over the political situation in BiH.

“All participants took the floor and voiced concern over the escalating political crisis, calling for de-escalation and political dialogue,” Žbogar stated, as reported by STA.

He described the situation in BiH as worrying and said it was appropriate for the Security Council to take note of it.

“I don’t believe there is a security crisis in the country, but there is a political crisis—and that was acknowledged during the consultations,” Žbogar concluded.
