Lukashenko: Republika Srpska can count on Belarus

Belarus is ready to support and assist Republika Srpska in accordance with its capabilities, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated today during a meeting with a delegation from Srpska, led by the Chairwoman of the Council of Peoples, Srebrenka Golić.

“I am pleased to welcome you to Belarus. You should know that you have not come to a country that is merely close to your people, but to your comrades and relatives,” Lukashenko told the Serb delegation.

He emphasized that Belarus is open to discussing all topics with its friends and is willing to do whatever it can for them, BelTA reports.

Lukashenko said he is well acquainted with the situation in Republika Srpska and has closely followed developments in the region since 1991, as well as since the signing of the Dayton Agreement.

“I saw serious flaws in that agreement. I warned my colleague and friend, President of Serbia Slobodan Milošević, that we needed to be extremely cautious when signing that agreement under the directive of the West and the Americans, as it could bring many troubles to the people,” Lukashenko said.

According to him, some of those warnings have materialized.

“The contradictions that exist within your seemingly united state have not been resolved. They have always remained sharp and were bound to eventually reach a breaking point,” he added.

Lukashenko stated that he was expressing these views so that the leadership of Republika Srpska would know that Belarus stands with Srpska as much as it can and will continue to provide support and assistance.

“Once again, I emphasize—as much as we can—because we are not geographically close to you, we do not border Bosnia and Herzegovina, nor your people, but we share the same roots. We remember that. So, you can count on us,” Lukashenko stressed.

He expressed confidence that Russia’s leadership shares a similar assessment and understanding of the situation.

“We know both the past and the present, and that is why we stand by your side,” Lukashenko stated.

The BelTA agency noted that the close ties between the people of Belarus and Republika Srpska were also reflected in the fact that during the official meeting, Lukashenko did not require a translator, as he understood most of what the guests said in Serbian.
