Borjan Mitrović, a senior assistant at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of East Sarajevo, delivered a lecture in Višegrad titled “Andrić’s Spaces of Light”, marking the beginning of the commemoration of 50 years since the passing of Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić.
Mitrović emphasized that March 13, 1975, was a significant loss for Serb, Yugoslav, and world literature, but Andrić’s work remains a lasting inspiration for researchers and readers worldwide.
“All of us who study, but above all, passionately read literature and turn to the works of Ivo Andrić will at some point ask ourselves: where did Andrić set out for on that March 13, 1975? Questions of death and the meaning of existence are central to his work, and perhaps he himself spent his entire life preparing for his final journey,” Mitrović said during his lecture at the Ivo Andrić Cultural Center.
Jelena Đurić, director of the Cultural Center, reminded that March has traditionally been a month dedicated to remembering the famous Višegrad-born writer.
She stated that the Ivo Andrić Cultural Center is the organizer of tonight’s program, as well as the three-day commemoration of Andrić’s passing, in collaboration with the National Library and the City Gallery.
“We are building our culture and a form of education in our city on Andrić’s name. Višegrad was his childhood, homeland, and inspiration,” Đurić said.
The musical portion of the program featured performances by Lenka Vujanović and Hasan Muratović, students at the Academy of Music in East Sarajevo.
The commemoration of 50 years since the passing of Ivo Andrić will continue in the coming days with various cultural and artistic events.
Tomorrow at 1:00 PM, the Andrić Institute will present an exhibition titled “Andrić and Višegrad: From the First Steps to Immortality”, curated by Gordana Stančić, Slavko Garić, Gorica Ćećez, and Željka Ostojić.
At 7:00 PM, the Ivo Andrić Cultural Center in Višegrad will host the presentation of the second part of the book “Blagoje Jovović – A Serb Hero in the Wolf’s Den”, written by Marija Jovović, daughter of Blagoje Jovović, who is remembered as the man who carried out the assassination of Ustaša leader Ante Pavelić.
On Friday, March 14, at 7:00 PM, the Višegrad City Gallery will open an exhibition of paintings by the Art Symposium Jahorina citizens’ association.
