Sarajevo ranks among the most polluted cities in the world this morning

Sarajevo is on the list of the most polluted cities in the world today, continuing the trend from recent days.

Gray skies, crows, reduced visibility, people wearing masks, and empty streets create an eerie scene in Sarajevo this morning, reminiscent of scenes from horror movies, reports the Sarajevo-based portal Klix.

Sarajevo’s air is more polluted than that of Dhaka (Bangladesh), Delhi (India), Karachi, and Lahore (Pakistan), cities synonymous with poor air quality.

At 8 a.m., the PM2.5 concentration was 61 times higher than the World Health Organization’s annual recommended value for PM2.5. The air quality index (AQI) this morning stood at 460, according to IQAir data.

The Sarajevo Canton Government declared an air quality emergency yesterday, advising residents to avoid outdoor activities. The air is classified as hazardous, with prolonged exposure posing serious risks to heart and lung conditions.

For those who must be outdoors, specialized face masks with respiratory filters such as FFP2 or FFP3 (N95 and N99 under U.S. standards) are recommended. However, these masks are intended for short-term use and do not provide full protection against polluted air.
