The play The Glass Menagerie, produced by the National Theatre of Istočno Sarajevo, will have its premiere on January 22 at 8 PM on the main stage of the National Theatre of Republika Srpska.
“The way this play addresses family issues within the broader context of the social community is comprehensible and direct, primarily in theatrical terms, but also in a cultural sense. While lifestyles change over decades, the fundamental drivers of socialization and societal status remain relatively constant, to such an extent that today’s audience will find the essence, recognize the situations, and feel the threat of internal unrest within a family laid bare and utterly vulnerable in every aspect of its existence, shaped by a general value system that is harsh, rigid, and unforgiving of mistakes. Even eighty years after its first stage performance, this play retains its inner strength, vividly portraying the perpetually relevant theme of a family disintegrating amidst the chaos of its microcosm,” stated the dramaturge of the play, Zoran Todorović.
The play is directed by Slobodan Perišić, one of the most prominent directors in the region, who noted that the story’s heroine possesses an exaggerated empathy for her peculiar collection of glass figurines, which she escapes to through music, entering her own world.
“In our world, diminished physical or psychological abilities are labeled as disabilities. The heroine of our story, in addition to her physical limitations, has an exaggerated empathy for her peculiar collection of glass figurines, retreating into her own world through music,” said Perišić, who, according to many industry professionals, achieved great success with the cast, vividly bringing Tennessee Williams’ masterpiece to life.
The cast features young actors whose time is yet to come, including Darko Stojić, Milan Dimić, and Marija Novaković, along with the experienced and exceptional Nataša Ivančević. R. V.
