A regular member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU), Kosta Čavoški, stated that the least Republika Srpska expects from the new American administration, following Donald Trump’s victory, is a shift in foreign policy toward this region, specifically to leave it in peace.
Čavoški told Srna that such changes could first become evident in the selection of key figures who will oversee Balkan and BiH affairs on behalf of Trump, after he officially assumes office in January.
Although there are currently no reliable indications or clear predictions that this will happen, Čavoški believes that U.S. policy under Trump’s leadership will not worsen for the Serbs.
“Whether it will improve, we shall see. What I believe the entire Serb nation desires is to be under one state roof. The implications of that are clear. Achieving this may not be easily attainable at this time, but it is a goal to work toward,” Čavoški remarked.
He added that all Serbs, including those in Republika Srpska, hope Trump’s policy toward them will be at least somewhat more favorable than that of the previous administration.
According to Čavoški, if Trump were to take any action concerning Republika Srpska, it would likely focus on the structure of BiH itself and the role of the High Representative.
“The American president would need to acknowledge that BiH, as it stands, is either unconstitutional or, as it is termed in English, a ‘failed state.’ In this context, he should shape his policy, especially regarding the role of the High Representative and all the negative consequences stemming from that role,” Čavoški concluded.
