An exhibition titled “Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Doboj Region” has opened in Doboj, unique within Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This exhibition marks the beginning of the establishment of a Center for Intangible Heritage, covering 11 municipalities.
Gathering iva grass on Ozren, gatherings around monasteries, and legends about stećak tombstones are part of the intangible heritage of the Doboj area. The goal of the exhibition is to preserve traditional knowledge and crafts from being forgotten. Cyrillic, as the oldest form of cultural heritage, faces numerous challenges today.
“It is significantly endangered. In Doboj’s main Svetosavska Street, out of approximately 140 businesses, only 33 display their names in Cyrillic,” noted the exhibition’s author, Nebojša Dragojlović.
The works of academic sculptor Drago Handanović are part of this intangible heritage.
“We all went out to the field—all museum staff—and made imprints there, brought them here, and created a patinated finish, giving the impression that it was truly brought from nature into the museum,” explained Handanović.
The exhibit includes elements from the daily lives of the people in the Doboj region. Students are also planning to visit.
“We are raising awareness of our national identity and of the region we come from and live in. It is crucial for every student to be acquainted with the heritage of the area they reside in,” emphasized Tijana Vasiljević Stokić, president of the Doboj Region High School Directors’ Association.
Visitors are pleased with the new exhibit.
New elements added to the list of intangible cultural heritage of Republika Srpska will also be presented within this exhibition concept.
