Bećirović in the Security Council acts solely as the Bosniak member

The Serb member of the BiH Presidency, Željka Cvijanović, stated that it is impossible to agree on a common platform for foreign policy actions in BiH and that Denis Bećirović is representing BiH in the UN Security Council solely as the Bosniak member of the Presidency.

Cvijanović emphasized that reaching a consensus with the other members of the Presidency is unachievable, as they refuse to forgo reliance on a foreign official who acts above democratically elected institutions.

  • They are unwilling to accept that we, the elected officials, should be resolving matters through agreements and dialogue. They want decisions to be imposed by international actors, according to their preferences. Under such circumstances, agreeing on a common platform is impossible, – Cvijanović stated.

She added that it is impossible to align platforms for foreign policy actions because of differing views on critical issues.

  • As a representative of Republika Srpska and the Serb people, I advocate that all institutions and all levels of government should be the bodies making relevant decisions, – Cvijanović said.

On the other hand, she added, the Bosniak representative demonstrates a preference for a staged democracy.

  • In this staged democracy, we, as elected representatives, are to serve as mere decorations, while an unelected foreigner would fulfill institutional roles, working in alignment with Bosniak political goals, – Cvijanović highlighted.

According to her, the fundamental disagreement lies in the role of the international factor, the local historical context, how “we endure the present, and how we envision our future.”

  • I advocate for constitutional principles as stated in the Constitution, and if the Constitution were to change one day, we should adhere to it as such. Currently, we live in a state of absolute disorder, where the Constitution prescribes one thing, but in practice, there is something else. I believe the country is out of luck, – Cvijanović concluded.
