An exhibition titled “Herb as a Spice: In the Realm of Colors, Scents, and Tastes” has opened at the Museum of Herzegovina in Trebinje, drawing significant attention from both younger and older residents of the southernmost city of Republika Srpska.
The exhibition takes visitors on a fascinating journey through the world of spices, offering a special experience for those curious about the mystical world of colors, scents, and tastes.
Uroš Buzurović, the exhibition’s creator from the Natural History Museum in Belgrade, explained that more than 30 plants are showcased, some native to the Balkan Peninsula, while others come from India, Indonesia, and various other countries.
“Each plant in the exhibition is accompanied by a description, detailing how it is used in cooking, along with interesting facts, myths, and legends. We also have an interactive section with an educational table where spices are ‘served’ alongside a world map. When a button is pressed for a particular spice, the part of the world from which it originates lights up. Additionally, there are jars containing essential oils for visitors to smell and identify the plant,” Buzurović explained.
Slavko Spasić, director of the Natural History Museum in Belgrade, emphasized that this exhibition reflects the passion of the museum’s staff for their work.
“This exhibition was quite demanding in terms of production, and we even hired a team that works on film sets for the design. Natural history exhibitions face the challenge of explaining complex processes in a simple way to foster a love for nature in the public. We’ve tried to engage all the senses because the experience is what matters most. In our gallery at Kalemegdan, this has been one of the most visited exhibitions, receiving great feedback. We are especially pleased to be here at the Museum of Herzegovina, which recently won the ŽIVA Award, and we are here to support them,” Spasić noted, as reported by eTrebinje.
Ivana Grujić, director of the Museum of Herzegovina in Trebinje, mentioned that this exhibition marks the beginning of a successful collaboration with the Natural History Museum from Belgrade.
“This is the first time the Natural History Museum is opening an exhibition in Republika Srpska and in Trebinje. As you can see, the people working there are not only experts but also highly innovative, adapting their knowledge and skills to a wider audience. This is particularly important for us because many of these plants, such as lavender and sage, originate from our region. I believe visitors will learn a lot, and it’s important to continually educate ourselves about spices, as they can be both medicine and poison,” Grujić stated.
The exhibition “Herb as a Spice: In the Realm of Colors, Scents, and Tastes” is organized as part of the “Days of Serbia in Republika Srpska” event and will be open to the public in Trebinje until November 1st.
