The ensemble of the National Theatre of Republika Srpska, with their performance of “Miss,” captivated the audience at Russia’s oldest national theater, the “Alexandrinsky.” Over two days of performances at the 15th International Theater Festival in St. Petersburg, the play was met with standing ovations and thunderous applause in the packed theater, which has been in existence for more than 250 years.
For the multi-award-winning “Miss,” this was its first international tour—and a very successful one, as confirmed by the director of the Russian theater, Alexander Malich, and the artistic director, Nikita Kobeliev. They remarked that standing ovations are a rarity at the “Alexandrinsky,” especially since the performance was delivered in the Serb language.
The festival’s program features plays based on classic works as well as contemporary dramas, making “Miss,” based on a novella by Ivo Andrić, a Nobel laureate and one of the foremost Serb writers of the 20th century, the perfect choice for the National Theatre of Srpska.
The play was staged on the New Stage of the “Alexandrinsky,” one of the best and most modern stages in the world. On this stage, which has modernized Russia’s oldest theater, the season features up to five premieres and more than 120 performances.
At the National Theatre of Republika Srpska, they emphasized that it was a pleasure and an honor to perform for a discerning audience that cherishes such a long theater tradition, in their own language, and to reach the audience through the emotional and scenic performance. They performed at a theater that nurtures national culture, promotes the values of art, and hosts theaters that shape the cultural landscape of their countries and nations.
The guest appearance of the National Theatre of Republika Srpska is the result of a collaboration with the “Alexandrinsky” theater that began in March of last year, marking the first collaboration with a national theater in Russia.
