It’s clear that the EU enlargement process has nothing to do with the actual situation in a country

The fact that North Macedonia, Ukraine, and Moldova are ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the EU enlargement process indicates that this process has nothing to do with the actual situation in a country seeking to join the EU, said Željko Budimir, Minister for Scientific and Technological Development and Higher Education of Republika Srpska.

Budimir pointed out that Moldova and Ukraine, which is currently engaged in the largest war in Eastern Europe since World War II, are considered better candidates than Bosnia and Herzegovina, which, despite all political problems, remains stable and without significant security challenges.

“This suggests that the entire enlargement process is driven by an ideological framework and has nothing to do with the real conditions in the country that seeks to join the Union,” Budimir said.

He also believes that the answer to the question of who is blocking Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path to the EU can be found by examining the state of the administration in both the entities and the joint institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Look at how the joint institutions function compared to Republika Srpska, which operates under significant political, financial, and economic pressure. We are stable and fulfill the agreements we have accepted, while on the other side, agreements last only as long as the stance on those agreements lasts. If the stance changes by the afternoon, the agreement will no longer hold,” Budimir added.

As a reminder, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU has begun accession negotiations with Albania, North Macedonia, Ukraine, and Moldova, and that Bosnia and Herzegovina could be next in line.
