Kesic: Trump’s victory would eestrict American ambassadors’ actions

A victory for the Republican candidate Donald Trump in the upcoming U.S. presidential election would limit the scope for adventures by American ambassadors, diplomats, and certain State Department officials behaving as they please in small countries like Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to former head of the Republika Srpska’s Representative Office in the U.S., Obrad Kesic.

Kesic told Srna that during Trump’s first presidential term, his focus was on larger issues than the Balkans, which suggests that his new victory would inherently represent a positive shift.

He noted that in such a context, American ambassadors in Sarajevo, Belgrade, and Tirana would not meddle as much in the internal politics of host countries.

“We would see a return to diplomatic normalcy with less room for the daily games, particularly from the American Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It would introduce a new dynamic,” said Kesic, who is also the head of the BiH Mission to the EU.

Kesic pointed out that Trump, during his previous term, focused on building a new order to align the interests of the world’s major powers – the U.S., Russia, and China.

He said that Trump would likely work on improving relations among these countries, especially with Russia, to bring the war in Ukraine to an end.

“He would probably continue to be aggressive towards China in terms of the economy and trade but would also accept China as an indispensable partner for stable economic growth in the U.S. and resolving international issues. This opens up space for Western Balkan countries and reduces the interference of American diplomats in the internal politics of their host countries,” Kesic explained.

Kesic added that any improvement in Washington-Moscow relations would automatically, both long-term and medium-term, benefit Serbia and Republika Srpska.

“All in all, Trump’s return would significantly open up space for better relations between Serbia and the U.S., and consequently, between Republika Srpska and the Americans. On the other hand, if the Democrats and their candidates win the presidential election, we can expect a continuation of the globally oriented and very aggressive and arrogant American foreign policy,” Kesic noted.

Kesic reiterated that Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance were the only ones clearly declaring themselves as anti-globalists, while the Democratic establishment and its future candidates, like Kamala Harris, represent the dominant elite in the U.S. administration that fully supports the current globalist policy.

“This policy has largely been built by numerous Democratic presidents in the last thirty or more years. This is the contrast between Trump and Vance’s campaign and Biden’s, which seems to continue with Harris,” Kesic said.

U.S. President Joe Biden recently announced that he is withdrawing as a Democratic candidate and supported Harris’s nomination.

NBC News reported that Democrats in Congress want to conduct an open process to select a candidate to replace Biden rather than quickly nominating Harris.

Republican Party presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that it would be easier for him to beat Harris than Biden.

The U.S. presidential election is scheduled for November 5.
