In Semberija, around 15,000 hectares were sown with wheat, the most widespread cereal crop, and the harvest is mostly completed, said the head of the city’s Agriculture Department, Sreten Vučković, to Srna.
He stated that, besides a solid yield this year in Semberija, the quality of the wheat is also good.
According to him, the average yield in Semberija this year will be around five to five and a half tons per hectare, which will be confirmed in a few days.
“Unlike last year, the quality is significantly better, and the price is only slightly higher,” said Vučković.
He added that, according to the Department’s data, wheat was mostly sold to buyers and purchase organizers, with less being sold to processors.
- “It is normal for some producers, who have storage capacities, to store their yield while waiting for a better purchase price. It is also certain that agricultural producers cannot be satisfied with the price offered by ‘Žitopromet’ of 35 fenings per kilogram,” said Vučković.
He explained that if the cost of wheat production is calculated, the producer would have invested around 2,000 KM per hectare from sowing to harvest.
Vučković believes that all parties in the discussions about the price of this cereal should take a more active role, considering that the price on exchanges is higher than the currently offered price in Semberija for purchase.
- “Everyone in the production and sales chain needs to be satisfied – the agricultural producers, the mill processors, and the purchase organizers. However, this does not happen year after year, and even this year, when the harvest is completed, we still do not have a purchase price for wheat,” said Vučković, adding that the problem is that all purchase organizers and mill processors already include the subsidy in the price, thus further lowering the price for the farmers.
