A new confirmation of quality for wine from Herzegovina has arrived, specifically for the indigenous Žilavka variety. This wine from the Bojanić Family Cellar in Trebinje won a bronze medal at the prestigious “Decanter World Wine” competition held in London, among 18,000 wines.
Žilavka was recognized as one of the top three wines in the world by eminent oenologists and sommeliers at this prestigious global wine showcase. Stevo, along with his brother Dimitrije, created this premium drink from grapes grown in their own vineyard. They were confident in the quality and sent only Žilavka for the competition.
“It won them over with its high minerality, notes of green apple, and bay leaf. We didn’t tell our father or anyone else, only when the award came,” said Stevo Bojanić, owner of Bojanić Winery.
The Bojanić family has continued a winemaking and viticulture tradition spanning over a century. They have their own vineyard covering about 2 hectares in their native Pridvorci. They plan to expand their vineyards and capacities, focusing on indigenous varieties such as Vranac and Žilavka. They produce five types of wine, which they market domestically and in the regional markets.
“Our great-grandfather had a vineyard here in Pridvorci. It is a family tradition, a great love, hard work, and sacrifice,” added Stevo Bojanić.
Their winery is an essential stop for tourists from all over the world, who visit the vineyards and cellar to taste the premium wines and learn about their production. Each visit is complemented by local delicacies such as prosciutto, cheese, and olives, making visitors from all over the world eager to return.
