The “Memorial Dmitar Marčeta” athletics meeting was held in Drvar, featuring over 150 competitors in various disciplines, with shot put and discus throw drawing particular attention.
High school and elementary school students competed in discus and shot put events, disciplines in which Marčeta achieved significant sports successes.
The competition included 100, 400, and 800-meter races, relays, long jump, javelin throw, and a street race.
A medal was presented to the family of Dmiter Marčeta, who attended the meeting, as a token of appreciation for their support and in memory of the legendary Dmiter, who was originally from Drvar.
“My father would have been overjoyed to see this. A lot of children have gathered, and we would love for this to become a tradition,” said Dmiter’s daughter, Milica Marčeta, thanking the Una Athletics Club for organizing the event.
Ivana Bosnić, president of Una, expressed pride in the young athletes who contributed significantly and once again demonstrated that Drvar is a city of sports.
Dmiter Marčeta, born in 1952 in Prekaja, brought fame to his hometown Drvar worldwide, and the municipality posthumously awarded him recognition in gratitude.
He represented Yugoslavia 28 times, and after his active sports career, he took on the role of coach in athletics and basketball, achieving notable results.
He was celebrated for his accomplishments in the discus throw, where he held the national record for many years until surpassed by Dragan Perić.
He also achieved significant results in the shot put, placing seventh at the 1977 Universiade and being a multiple national champion.
