Deputy President of the Mostar City Council, Velibor Milivojević, stated that he expects the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton to quickly find those responsible for setting fire to a Serbian returnee’s car in the Hodbina neighborhood of this city. He noted that otherwise, people cannot feel safe.
Milivojević expressed concern for the safety of Serbs in the Mostar area and questioned the authorities on how long such incidents will go unpunished.
He recalled that in the past two years, there have been a series of attacks on returnees and their property, none of which have been resolved, sending a bad message not only to Serbs but to all citizens.
“Returnees in Mostar struggle in many neighborhoods to restore destroyed properties and bring their lives to a decent level, yet every now and then someone causes an incident that makes people feel unsafe in their homes and city even 30 years after the war,” Milivojević told Srna.
He also questioned what message is being sent in Mostar by such incidents and their lack of resolution.
Milivojević expects the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton to protect citizens and their property.
Dragi Rupar, a Serb returnee to the Mostar neighborhood of Hodbina, had his car set on fire in front of his family home last night. Rupar told Srna that around 7 a.m. this morning, he smelled something burning, went outside, and saw his car on fire.
“The rear part of the car is completely burnt. I am in shock, I have no words, I do not feel safe,” Rupar said.
He stated that the police conducted an investigation and that those present at the scene told him that all indications are that the fire was intentionally set.
