The stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is crucial for preventing conflict and maintaining stability and peace in the region and Europe, stated Robert Wood, Deputy Ambassador of the U.S. to the UN.

During the debate on BiH in the UN Security Council, Wood reminded that the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement ended the war in BiH “almost 30 years ago.”

Wood believes that the Office of the High Representative (OHR) “remains essential in ensuring the implementation of the civilian aspects of the Dayton Agreement and in ensuring the continued functioning of institutions in BiH.”

He noted that the U.S. supports the sovereignty, multi-ethnicity, and territorial integrity of BiH, and also supports the OHR’s mandate, including the Bonn Powers, until the “5+2 Agenda” is fulfilled.

Wood emphasized that Washington agrees that the opening of accession negotiations with the European Union “is a game-changer for BiH’s prospects.”

The U.S. representative mentioned that the U.S. will continue to use “all available tools,” including sanctions, to confront “those who enable corruption and destabilize BiH.”

Wood called on the international community to actively support the OHR.

He added that the Security Council should support BiH in choosing a free and prosperous future.
