The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina marks so-called Independence Day of BiH on March 1st, because on that date an illegal referendum on independence and secession of BiH from the SFRY was held.

In the Republika Srpska, this day is synonymous with an illegitimate referendum held against the will of the Serbian people, the brutal murder of a Serb wedding guest, the wounding of an Orthodox priest, and the burning of the Serb flag in Sarajevo’s Baščaršija, as well as the fact that the murderers remained unpunished.

This tragic date is not celebrated in the Republic of Srpska, but rather November 21st – the day when the General Framework Agreement for Peace in BiH was signed at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, marking the end of the civil war in BiH.
