President of the People’s Party of Republika Srpska (NPS), Darko Banjac, stated that he opposes Bosnia and Herzegovina’s entry into the EU if the condition is for Republika Srpska to renounce itself and its statehood granted by the Dayton Peace Agreement.
“I don’t oppose if the EU accepts us as we are. I don’t want to renounce myself, any part of myself, or our traditions and customs to enter the EU,” said Banjac, commenting on the recent visit of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to Bosnia and Herzegovina and her discussions with local officials and politicians.
Banjac noted that every visit is welcome, but he believes that Europe has long succumbed to some negative influence. He thinks the EU should accept nations and countries as they are, without trying to change them.
Regarding the statement from the U.S. Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina that there can be no change in the BiH Election Law without a change in the BiH Constitution, Banjac stated that the law can be adopted without constitutional changes as it must comply with the Dayton Peace Agreement.
He emphasized that a domestic political agreement had been reached regarding the adoption of this law, but Americans, as well as the British, apparently do not allow an agreement to be reached in these regions.
“They tell us to reach an agreement, and when we do, they say it cannot be like that. We shouldn’t pay any attention to them at all,” Banjac concluded.
