Šulić: Mountains among the most important tourist attractions

Denis Šulić, the Minister of Trade and Tourism of Republika Srpska, highlighted the region’s status as a tourist destination providing a unique experience in untouched nature and outdoor activities. Speaking to Srna, he emphasized the importance of mountains as one of the most crucial tourist attractions available.

“Our mountains are one of the most important tourist attractions we possess, not only during winter, when the focus is on mountain or winter tourism. Throughout the year, our mountains offer a variety of high-quality activities for enthusiasts of adrenaline sports and tourists using these destinations for hiking, quad biking, walking, and other forms of nature-based recreation,” Šulić stated on the occasion of World Mountain Day.

He pointed out that destinations such as Jahorina, Kozara, Zelengora, Trebević, Ravna planina, and Manjača are already recognizable among enthusiasts of these activities. Šulić emphasized that it is everyone’s task to responsibly contribute to their development, expanding offerings while preserving the natural environment, which is the primary reason for tourist visits.

“It is a very demanding task, but it is our primary commitment and a strategic goal to develop sustainable tourism and enable future generations to enjoy such nature through a responsible approach,” Šulić stated.

International Mountain Day is observed every year on December 11. The United Nations General Assembly declared this day following the International Year of Mountains in 2002, where numerous experts emphasized the need for continuous awareness of the significant role mountains play and the necessity for sustainable development to ensure their preservation.

In anticipation of this year’s International Mountain Day, the UN emphasizes that mountains are natural treasures that should be preserved. According to UN indicators, mountains are home to 15% of the world’s population, hosting approximately half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots.
