At the Cultural Center “Ivo Andrić” in Višegrad, 70 years of the Cultural House’s work in this city were celebrated.

For 70 years now, the Cultural House in Višegrad, now known as the Cultural Center “Ivo Andrić,” has been an integral part of the city’s life.

It has been a hub for cultural events, a place where cultural habits were initiated and nurtured, offering theatrical performances, movies, and concerts.

“Before World War II, the Serbian House occupied a central place in Višegrad. It was a significant cultural institution that united all cultural societies of Višegrad before the war. With the emergence of new states and ideologies, at the initiative of professors from the Višegrad Gymnasium, the construction of the Cultural House began,” stated Professor Divna Vasić.

Mirjana Baranac, the director of the Cultural Center “Ivo Andrić,” mentioned that the Cultural House was built in 1953, and for decades, cultural and socio-political activities have been held in these premises. Over the years, the Cultural House has seen success in its operations, thanks to the municipality of Višegrad as its founder and good cooperation with other public institutions and enterprises.

In celebration of the jubilee, an exhibition of photographs titled “Through Culture in Višegrad” was opened, showcasing the cultural life of Višegrad, including theater, film, and ballet. The exhibition highlighted that Višegrad once had a more vibrant cultural life than it might have now, according to the exhibition’s author, Vesna Nešković.

The Cultural Center represents a local hub of special societal interest that contributes to general education, information dissemination, and the satisfaction of cultural needs.

Currently housed within the Cultural Center “Ivo Andrić” are the City Gallery and the Public Library.
